So it turns out you are brave.
Even in your most painful, humbled, curled-up-in-a-ball moments, you are brave. What else would you call being with the last thing you would ever want for yourself? I call it brave. Maybe it’s not ideal, but it’s certainly courageous.
It takes a lot of energy.
Living with chronic illness is exhausting. Not only do you need to attend to yourself at a high level, you have to find some way to communicate to everyone around you what is happening and want you need. With so much energy going out, it can be challenging to express experiences well. It’s hard to describe a hurricane when you are busy being in one. Having support to reflect on the changing dynamics and needs of your body, relationships, life, and identity can be incredibly helpful, empowering, and clarifying.
Who will understand?
Not everyone is going to understand what you are going through. Most of our loved ones just want us to be happy and well. They may not know what to do or say. They may even prefer to pretend like nothing is happening, or on the other extreme, be like a hawk hovering over their child. They have good intentions, but their desire for you to be well can get in the way of the honest, and sometimes messy, authentic expression you need right now to be well.
Let’s give you the support you need.
Our work together will be about creating a space for you to be radically honest, to let your feelings flow (all of them), to digest how this experience is changing you, and to identify what needs to develop in you to feel compassionate, centered, and clear. Let’s give you time and space to let your whole self come forward.
